Issue of October 5, 1940. Press time rumor has it that the Dante show closes its N.Y. run this Sun. night, Oct. 6th. We hope it's untrue for the same source informs that Dante may not be satisfied with the box office arrangements. To us this sounds silly for one of Dante's business acumen and sagacity. The public likes the show and every week in New York, down to the vanishing point of profits, is worth plenty when the production takes to the road. Perhaps Dante doesn't yet realize how magic shows of the big type have lost favor here…
The Jinx - Issue of October 12, 1940 We're going home in the spring. For thirteen years we've existed in New York City, the last five at the same address. Our Waverly, N.Y. spot for mail was kept, since that first advertisement in The Sphinx about fifteen years ago, because it was easily remembered and also because we sort of expected to return there one day. Countless times we've explained why we were living 200 miles from the mail deposit box. Countless times we'll probably wish we were back among our friends to "talk tricks" "do tricks" and ask "Who's…
Scooperoo Dept: Dante is scheduled to open with his full evening production at the Morosco Theatre in New York City on September 9th. The West 45th Street playhouse should be filled with magicians that night. Mark it down now. By carrier (or stool ?) pigeon: Harlan Tarbell had his official day at the N.Y. World's Fair on July 11th. After lunch with Ford company officials (and plenty press pics) he entertained at various spots with a half hour bit of "Eyeless Vision" at the band stand. It might not have made much talk around the world at the moment, but…
While Mr. Annemann tries to enjoy a vacation away from The Jinx, the Editrivia page will be written by friends selecting their own subject matter to be reproduced here unexpurgated. This week Mr. Walter Gibson has his say. Next week the nod will be given to Dr. Harlan Tarbell. Just why there should be two or more national magical societies, holding separate annual conventions, electing different groups of officers, and sponsoring individual publications, is a mystery to most thinking magicians. It leads to the opinion that one unified group, patterned along the right line, could achieve the very results that…
The Jinx cats are being fed and looked after by friends during Mr. Annemann's vacation. This week's Editrivia page has been written by Dr. Harlan Tarbell. Next week it will be Mr. William Larsen's turn to keep cobwebs from the door. I wonder if Ted's vacation will be anything like mine. I thought I would get a good rest by going over to Waukazoo Inn at Holland, Michigan, managed by a good friend of mine. Visions of the lake and lying around. But when people found I was a MAGICIAN then the siege began to do tricks. Grownups followed me…
Mr. Annemann's vacation is about over. Editrivia pages are being filled by friends during his absence. This week is carried by William Larsen, Editor of GENII. Next week's final guest editriviartist will be John Mulholland. Thanks, Ted Annemann, it's a pleasure and a privilege to guest edit an Editrivia. Just the thought of working with you takes me back quite a few years ago when you and I were both hitting the ball for good old Doc Wilson. Happy days were those. I forget just when I first heard of Ted Annemann, but I think it was just as I…
During Mr. Annemann's vacation the Editrivia pages are being filled by friends. This week's information is presented by John Mulholland, Editor of THE SPHINX. Next week a rather lonesome for magic news editor will be back on the job. Dear Ted, You ask that I fill your Editrivia page for one issue in order to give you a little time off for "lolling". I am at a loss to know quite what you have in mind for in looking up loll in Webster's I find the first meaning to be; to let the tongue protrude as when heated by labor.…
The mail bag lock hit us twice in the same place this week, the event happening only once thru the four month period put in as a neophytic railway mail clerk back what seems ages ago. Both pieces of mail were from subscribers who suddenly took umbrage at our too occasional unerudite garbling of the English language within these pages, specifically on this one. We can imagine this being true in the summer time, for, to look up a prospective verb, the window must be allowed to drop, and it has been awfully, awfully hot of late. One writer kindly…
Tom Worthington, 3rd, mimeo'd the 132nd issue of the Tablets of Osiris this July, finishing 11 years of unremitting warfare against exposing and S.A.M. policies. Composer of over 30 meanings for the initials of that society, none of which are complementary, (high on our list is Some Are Magicians) this fire-breathing advocate of knowledge and ethics rounded out his latest annum with a request of all magic clubs, to wit, "Be sure your members are sincere and that they understand magic and are not joining simply to have their curiosity satisfied and to 'act smart' in company to telling how…
Our unblemished (and surprising to some) record of 40 weekly issues had to be jinxed by some demon or djinn when we listened for the bell to ring on #100. A full page of copy was lost between here and there and the printer didn't discover it over the 4th of July holiday. It had to be done over and the slip up caused several of the "boys" to smile behind their transparent hank boxes and say, "We told you so." But, if such feelings made them happy we're glad. It only shows how far The Jinx will go to…
