The Reticent Queen

If you have one of the P&L metal card boxes sitting around, this makes an excellent effect as an after dinner or parlor trick. Any card box that locks though, can be used. In short, the spectator writes the name of some dead person on a small card which you give them, and it is placed writing side down and covered with a Queen from the deck. You then put the Queen to your ear, leaving the card with the dead name on the table, but she says nothing. You try again, but still no result. Then, with the remark…

A Mentalist With Money

If ever there was an impromptu mental novelty, this should be it. I took the basic working from an idea of Montreal's Charles Peet about two years ago, and it has served me quite well. Borrow a derby or soft hat. Say that you'll show a test of clairvoyance and telepathy combined. Ask for the loan of seven or eight one dollar bills. However, before starting to collect them, step up to one volunteer and ask him to write his name in pencil on his bill to identify it later as his. Ask him to fold it over and over…

An Amusing Card Reversal

Rather unique is this reversal of a chosen card in that it also is combined with a version of the 'card to the top' effect. The working will be described along with the effect. A double backed card to match the deck is used. Place this double backed card on top of the pack and have a card selected. Undercut about half of the pack, have the chosen pasteboard replaced on top of the deck, and cover with the undercut lower half. At this point the chosen card, with double backer directly under it, must be brought to the top.…

Diabolical Influence

Of all the bare-face swindles to cross my path in many moons, I consider this original effect of Mr. Solomon's worthy of the highest award. I only fear the reader will think it all too simple and not give due consideration to the effect upon the witnesses. I think it to be the acme of parlor and drawing-room conceptions. Presentation The performer has a deck of cards, a gummed sticker, a pencil, and paper. He starts by taking a card from the deck, for instance, the Two of Diamonds, on the face of which he makes a notation and covers…

A Cigarette Rolled by Proxy

The effect of a cigarette being rolled by the tongue is not new by any means, it having been on the market for some time. This original kink, however, makes it quite a bit smoother and much more practical. The first version as marketed, requires some preparation, and the cigarette as produced from the mouth is seldom in good shape despite precautions. This present version may be presented at a moment's notice anywhere and repeated at any time without getting ready for it. For this method is used one of the rubber cigarettes sold in all novelty stores as a…

A Card to be Thought About

Impromptu thought of card tricks have always been welcome and many letters have come to me in the course of years asking about similar effects that have fooled the writers. I'll explain this exactly as I have been using it. The deck is spread out face down and the spectator asked to remove three cards at will and hold them. He is to carefully study them and finally make a mental choice of one and keep it firmly in mind. Squaring up the deck, the performer has them replaced and then proceeds to mix a little. Each performer will use…

The Finders

This effect differs with the size of the audience but in each case the performer appears to have perfect control of the pasteboards. An ordinary deck is shown and riffled. A spectator inserts his finger or a knife into the pack and removes the card stopped at. There is no forcing. His card is replaced upon the deck. Two cards are now removed and shown. The selected card is cut to the center of the pack. Performer takes the pack and the two cards just shown and states that he will thrust them reversed into the squared up deck. Suppose the two…
