Newspell

For a quick, clean, and cute spelling manoeuvre, this will fill the bill and appear different from the usual type. Have a card selected and replaced. Shuffle the deck and ask spectator the color of his card. Red or black, you spell off the color dealing a card at a time face down on table or his hand. Then ask him the suit. This is spelled off also. Lastly ask if the card were odd or even. Again you spell off whatever he says. He names his card and you have it. The card is selected freely but as you…

Dead Man’s Hand

When "Wild Bill" was shot from behind by Jack McCall, in the Deadwood days of outlawry, it stopped the life of a picturesque character, but started the legend of the "dead man's hand" and made possible this most original card story and routine in years. In the Mann and Lewis Saloon of Deadwood, S.D., "Wild Bill" Hickock was playing poker with friends. His back towards the one door made it possible for the murder just as Bill was preparing to make his "draw" to the hand illustrated here with the original cards that were taken from his lifeless hands a…

The “Ad Lib” Spelling

Over 15 years ago a method on the order of the following was sold by Larry Gray through the columns of The Sphinx. This method of handling, however, adds a little surprise, and gives the onlooker a little something else to think about than the actual trick. Use any deck, and have the spectator give them a thorough mixing. Fan for a selection, which is perfectly free. The card is put back, and, in any way suitable to the individual performer, it is brought to the top or the bottom. At this point, the card is only glimpsed and the…

From Beyond the Grave

Here is an effect which is original with me and one that has been reposing in my notebook for several years. My idea originally was to market it in the usual fashion as a dollar secret, but those days are past. All you need is a packet of 20 or more blank cards, but I prefer at least 35 because it makes the handling easier. Hand them to a spectator and ask that they use any one of them. Take back those left and ask the person to think for a moment of a relative or friend who is not…

The Puzzling Speller

A neat version of the think of a card spelling principle is to be had in this effect, and it also brings out a nice mixing idea of which I wasn't aware. I'll describe the working as I go along. Have six extra cards to match your deck and they are such that they can be arranged to spell out with 10-11-12-13-14-15 letters. I've been using the AC-6H-JS-8H-9D-QD. Take these same cards from the pack proper and arrange them as above from back to face. Put them on the deck with three cards above (any three from the deck). On…
