Our May 1938 issue #44 had what now is becoming much discussed, or at least mentioned by various magical mag writers. The prophecy (to a day !) when Austria would lose her independence was offset a bit by "A country, not long ago thought to be strong and stormproof, will offer a very pitiful spectacle". The date given was July 22, and two months later came Munich. This was all Oct. 1937 prophecy business via astrology. However, the spine tingler angle on that Polish monk's seering, (also in #44) which, mind you, was foretold in 1788, was regarding the "general…
Jinx Indexes are all gone so don't order from us direct. Try your dealer. We had no idea so many were keeping complete files although the fact that back numbers have never appeared on counters at nickel and dime prices should have tipped us off. And speaking of sellouts, the Hilliard book has passed 800 of the 1000 edition. There is talk in the air of another printing. There has been some discussions about the number of card tricks in the tome. Well, The Art Of Magic is still selling, isn't it? And you consider it a textbook, don't you?…
Regardless of how many say that magic is being killed by this and that, the fact remains that night clubs and hotels are still providing most lucrative spots for magi ever. Marlowe, the Mystic, recently closed nine months of table work at Philadelphia's Arcadia, and opened at New York's Hollywood Restaurant, a spot which no one else to date has had. He gave me permission to state that his ENTIRE routine of table mysteries have come from The Jinx. Who says the sheet isn't practical ? And who are we to pass up such a good ad ? And for…
Ye editor fell in the water during the past month so is now learning to swim. Frank Dodd, that genial secretary of the New York Metropolitan Opera House, gave a day's outing and free-for- all picnic on his Millfield estate in Babylon, N.Y., for the local magi, over 70 of whom made their appearance. Other journals have described the perfect time had by all and the nice program that was given in the early evening on the spacious verandah. This scribbler couldn't resist a 10:00 P.M. invitation of Carey Dodd's to participate in a sail of his thirty footer but…
Before you is the third issue of The Jinx Extra to appear. We say this very blatantly because we are of the opinion that never before has there been published a service for magicians so particular about the concocted effects it dishes up. We may not always score a bullseye and we may not be able to please all of the readers all of the time, but from the response our efforts have received, we know at least that we are pleasing all of the readers some of the time, and some of the readers all of the time. That's…
Magical folk have their grief like normal people. Bob Gysel's father passed away on July 14th in Toledo, Ohio. He was the oldest druggist in the state of Ohio, and much of Bob's unique knowledge came from their close association. His recent letters mirror the loss and my sympathy is extended wholeheartedly. On the 10th of this month, the mother of U.F. Grant died in Pittsfield, Mass. at the age of 79. There were quite a number of the territorial magicians to the funeral, among them being Gordon Peck of Glen Falls, N.Y., Paul Noffke, Delaporte, George Ellsworth, Mr and…
Now that convention time is over I can rest (as if I don't do enough of that !) again and glory in the memories. Out in Batavia, N.Y., the I.B.M. bought up the town as usual and received more newspaper space and more pictures in the city dailies of Buffalo and Rochester than ever obtained by any other magical organization or club. I can't understand why more of the eastern and New York boys don't take in these events. The high mogul of an eastern club told me that he wouldn't go because he didn't like the class of people…
