An Original Ball-Dropper

Ottokar Fischer’s ball-dropper is a simple yet highly effective device that allows a magician to secretly obtain a ball without detection, even under close scrutiny. The design is straightforward and ensures seamless execution during performances.

Construction

The dropper is crafted from a sturdy wire approximately 1/16th of an inch in diameter, bent into a specific form. A safety pin is attached to the longer loop using heavy black thread. To complete the device, a three-quarter inch black tape is sewn in place, creating a small bag about an inch and a half deep—large enough to hold a ball of the same size.

The circular section of the dropper has a diameter of one and three-quarters inches, while the overall length from end to end (excluding the safety pin) measures about three inches. The dimensions can be adjusted depending on the size and shape of the ball, allowing for variations such as an egg-shaped holder.

Usage and Handling

The dropper is pinned inside the coat, about a finger’s breadth from the lower edge, ensuring easy access. The ball is inserted into the holder with the ribbons directed toward the body. To retrieve the ball, the magician lowers their arm until the thumb muscle rests against the ball’s position.

The middle and ring fingers then bend under the edge of the coat and gently press the lower loop toward the body. Due to gravity, the ball is released into the bent fingers. The magician simply raises their arm, seamlessly palming the ball for the next phase of the routine.

Performance Tips

It is crucial to avoid any sudden or fidgety movements while retrieving the ball. The hand should remain completely still, maintaining a natural and relaxed posture. The dropper is designed to be highly reliable—the ball will never fall accidentally, even during brisk movements, jumping, or dancing.

Once the ball has been retrieved, the dropper remains flat against the body, ensuring there is no visible bulge or obstruction. This practical and discreet design makes it one of the most effective ball-dropping gimmicks ever conceived, allowing for smooth and undetectable sleight-of-hand operations.
